6 Tips On How to Focus Your Mind When You Feel Out of Sorts

How to focus your mind on a task can be a little bit difficult, but not impossible. The more distractions we have in our daily life, the more unfocused we become.

I know there are days where I feel like I should be doing one thing, but what do I do. I go out of my way to avoid doing that one thing to do everything else.

Later on in the day, I berate myself that I didn’t get done what I needed to get done.

In today’s world, it is even more challenging to stay focused. Especially since everything is available at our fingertips. By this I mean cell phones, computer, laptop, and tablets.

Research has shown that people who are focused on one task at a time, are more successful as well they perform better.

Juggling too many multiple tasks can definitely leave a person struggling to stay up with their daily to-do list.

I know my daily to-do list suffers when I find myself getting overwhelmed with too many things to do.

Our mind is potent and is more than capable of processing loads of information. As well it controls our behaviors. Due to its great qualities, it can also be developed to create and strengthen new habits.

However, it has one fundamental vulnerability!

That being that it is susceptible to interferences or distractions.

Here are some tips and tricks on how you can focus your mind to develop focus and concentration.

Develop Self- Control

Developing your self-control can lead to having control over your life.

I don’t know if any of you can recall/know the 1960s marshmallow experiment. This was an experiment conducted on four-year-olds – they could either get one marshmallow now or wait and get two marshmallows later.

These children were followed into adulthood. What psychologist Walter Mischel noticed was the children who had displayed self-control were more successful academically, had better health as well as lower rates of marital separation and divorce.

There was another experiment conducted involving 1000 children who were tracked from birth to the age of 32.

In this study, researchers found that childhood self-control predicts how well the child would do as an adult.

How do they know this?

By tracking the 32 children, they learned the ones with self-control were the ones who were more successful which involved their health as well as wealth.

How can you develop self-control?

One of the best ways to develop self-control is to have a can-do attitude. This attitude can go a long way in helping you reach your goals.

Always monitor yourself for progress. As you know people, who are trying to lose weight count their calories. Those who don’t count their calories usually end up not losing any weight.

You will always need to self motivate yourself especially when it comes to developing self-control. If you don’t have any motivation of what you’ll achieve, just know self-control won’t turn itself on.

You need to flip the switch!

Learning to resist temptations requires willpower which comes from self-control. The thought process is to do one thing and be good at. Then move on to the next one.

Practice Mindfulness

By practicing mindfulness, you are teaching your mind how to stay hyperaware yet be focused. It’s aware of what’s going on however you are intentionally telling it to focus on one thing.

Being aware during mindfulness helps to prevent anxiety of overthinking and rumination, which can lead to destructive thoughts.

You are also improving your memory as well as concentration and, and performance. During mindfulness, you are forced to pay attention to one thought.

This focused exercise you perform during mindfulness also will manifest itself in your daily life. It’s a great way to train how to focus your mind without distractions.

Exercise

Exercise is another way to learn focus. How exercise induces concentration is that when you go to the gym, you work on one machine to develop the muscle for which the apparatus is made.

Most people who go to the gym would never just randomly decide what to do when they get there. They already have a plan laid out of precisely what they’re going to do to get to their goal.

By following the plan that they’ve laid out at the gym, subconsciously their teaching themselves how to keep their mind focused.

Avoid Distractions

Sometimes I wake up in the morning with 1001 things to do. Obviously, I’m not going to get 1001 things done; maybe just maybe I’ll be able to do one of the items.

Overloading myself right in the morning does not set me up for the rest of the day.

Distractions come in many forms such as phone calls, email and if you work at home, family members walking in.

There has to be a way for you to learn how to avoid distractions. These very distractions which will lead you astray, believe me, once you’re distracted it becomes tough to return to what you are doing.

Have you ever watched a YouTube video? I’m pretty sure you have. Have you ever noticed that YouTube videos unless you’re hyper-focused, are great attention hogs?

I definitely have. When I go to watch a YouTube video, I don’t just stop at one. In the right panel are a bunch of videos that YouTube throws at me thinking I’ll be interested.

Well, guess what?

I am interested. There were days where I used to waste hours upon hours watching YouTube videos.

Now I permit myself to watch one video and then immediately return to the task I was performing.

It’s not the best method, but it works for me.

Learn Something New Every Day

Learning something new every day doesn’t have to be difficult. As a matter of fact, it can be pretty easy.

For instance last night I wanted to learn how to do Facebook ads. So off I went to YouTube to look for how to create Facebook ads.

Before we go any further let me tell you I did not allow the right panel to distract me!

Anyways back to my story about learning to do Facebook ads. It was something new to me; I knew I had to learn it, so I was very hyper-focused on it.

What the past me would’ve done was watch a little bit of the training and then watch something that was interesting to me.

But last night I was very happy with myself that I completed the whole video and set up a Facebook ad right away. Which by the way is getting a lot of clicks, which means I am happy I learned something new.

Let Go of Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts are a hindrance as well they bring you out of focus fast. There isn’t a day that I don’t have the thought, “I’m going to die one day soon.”

What do I do with that thought?

I let it play out because I know the thought needs to be heard. As soon as I’ve listened to the thought, it leaves my mind.

Every single thought we have has value, doesn’t matter if it’s negative or positive. The value is that it needs to be heard. Once it’s understood, it’s finished for the day.

Not saying that it won’t pop up again another day, but for this day it most likely is done.

Now that you know how to focus your mind let me know in comments below how you plan to implement these tips in your daily life.

  1. This article has hit home with me that’s for sure, especially the part you talked about avoiding distractions. I usually have a lot of things to do and then I get distracted and I end up not accomplishing my goals for the day. For example since I have two websites, that I am working on, I usually plan to write at least one post for one website, and do something else on the other website. But then while doing research I could get distracted and not do the things I meant to do.
I will try to follow your advice.
    Thank you so much.

    1. Yes, I have a lot to do in my day as well. But the nice thing is Zoe Bray-Cotton shows us how to breeze through in the last phase of the Yoga Burn Challenge. Saves a lot of time. Thanks for your comment.

  2. This was meant specially for me. I’ve been through a lot recently and I have kind of lost my ability to focus. I just also started exercising again but I’m already giving up. I am gingered up now, will keep at it and add meditation to it. YouTube is a good place to learn something new each day but of course, it comes with that distraction at the right corner, nevertheless, I would try to employ self-control to use it for the purpose for which I am there. Thanks for the tips.

    1. I hope you get your ability to focus back. Great that you’re starting to exercise, don’t give up, please. You’re right YouTube is one of the best places to learn something that we don’t know. My hobby is crafting. So I go on YouTube a lot to learn different types of crafting ideas. Thank you for your comment.

It really is hard to focus on one thing, but I like your tips about self-control, mindfulness, attitude, exercise, letting go of negative thoughts and avoiding distractions. 4. Lovely post you got here, I really benefited from it. These tips are great and I must say I’ve had few experience with some of them, especially avoiding distractions when the case of one or more arose. Dealing with distraction is from within, before you can focus during distractions you really need to shut your mind against them from within, this has always helped me. This can be done based on individual’s ways of thinking, modding thoughts to suit you, and getting priorities straight.

I agree with you totally. Positive thinking, healthy body and mind. Sometimes I can work with the radio on and other times it’s just distracting. My dad always said “if at the end of the day you did not learn at least one thing then you did not do it right” Good self control is a must. I thank you for reasuring my thoughts. Self discipline is a very vital component when we talk about success and so many other things.

  10. Thanks for trailing our the time to write about this, focusing really helped my business and also to get my priorities right most of the time just like you mentioned. It’s just like the saying “Jack of all trades is a matter of none”, focusing on one task at hand makes the performance better, and the experience more precise. Thanks for other tips, keep up the good works.

    1. You’re right focusing on one task at a time is definitely better and experience is more precise. Success is achieved when the focus is attained. Thank you for your comment
