Improve Self Awareness Through Inner Insight – Discover Who You Really Are

Why do you need to improve self-awareness? How will inner insight help you?

These are questions you might need answering right now at this time in your life.

Honestly, by being self-aware, you create an opportunity to make changes in your life.

Having clear perceptions of our self which includes our personality, strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, motivations, and emotions allow us to understand how others perceive us.

By becoming self-aware, you’ll be able to make changes in how you interpret thoughts in your mind.

Self-awareness allows you to see where your thoughts/emotions are taking you to take control of your feelings, behaviors, and personality so you can make adjustments as required.

Until you are not fully aware, making the change can be pretty tricky.

Most people want to improve self-awareness because it helps to strengthen the relationship with themselves as well as with others.

You need to know to improve self-awareness is not.

  • Your desire to take control

When you desire to take control, it shows that you have no trust in those others around you. By taking control,  you permit yourself to make assumptions.

Most people will take control which absolves them of responsibility to take time to do the work as well as communicate effectively.

  • Taking ownership of bad decisions

It’s important to realize that you are human and you will make decisions which will not be right.

When you try to deflect negative attention from an unwanted issue, others may see you as a dismissive person who avoids all responsibility.

  • To defend yourself from feedback

You have to realize that feedback as well as critique is always going to be a part of your life. Nobody’s perfect. Remember not everything is about you.

I know sometimes it can be challenging to sit in an uncomfortable situation. It’s also essential that you remember to try to look at the situation from someone else’s perspective.

  • Say things you do not mean

This is a significant part of self-awareness. Why? Because sometimes we say things we don’t mean.

For example, telling someone, they did a good job even though we know it was a crappy job.

This type of passive-aggressive behavior is a way to avoid confrontations as well as deflect feelings.

Many people when the going gets tough -get tough. But those who don’t get tough tend to bury their emotions to not deal with them.

You need to know inner insight is not:

  • Disconnecting from your feelings

By having discord with your insight leads to you not being able to use your intuition or learning what another individual is all about.

You disconnect from your emotions which then hinder the awareness that pops up inside you when working on yourself.

  • Trying not to see something you’ve already seen

Many times most of us will try not to see something we’ve seen, that we wish wasn’t true.

By learning to accept the facts of life we open ourselves up to seeing a lot more than we usually would.

There are several different ways to improve self-awareness. I have listed below for you the top methods I use when I need to be more aware of myself to live in the present moment.

Meditation is a way to quiet our mind chatter while connecting us to our inner selves to gain some inner insight.

By learning to meditate, you will be able to decrease your causes of anxiety and sadness. During meditation, we learn to identify what causes us to think ourselves into an abyss of darkness.

Meditation is an open source to attaining mindfulness living skills

Mindfulness is a great way to become more aware. While practicing this technique, we are intentionally present in every experience we have at any given time.

By being present, you learn to pick up on many different types of connections. For instance, you would not undo stitches after you had undergone surgery. You know those stitches are healing the area to become whole again.

Get Out of the Comfort Zone

By getting out of your comfort zone, you learn to meet life with passion.

No one likes change.

Because most of us desire to keep our life going on the path that we’ve already been traveling for so long because of the comfort it brings.

No growth happens!

The problem with traveling the same path is life becomes redundant and boring. Redundancy and boredom lead to depression.

Everything that happens in the comfort zone will always be what happens in the comfort zone.

Once you step out of your comfort zone that’s where the magic happens, you learn new things; you see new things as well you experience new things.

Take Note of Your Values

Values are fundamental when becoming self-aware. Without values, we have no placement anywhere.

When our values are taken into consideration by ourselves, we know that we are prioritizing our life in the way that we see fit to live.

Our values help us to understand ourselves better. By creating values, we also bring in wisdom. Wisdom helps to improve our knowledge as well as where to apply our valued skills.

Honesty is another value that comes in with self-awareness. We can explain both our strengths and weaknesses. We don’t tell “fishing stories.” You know what I’m talking about, one where the fish gets bigger and bigger each time the story is told.

Our values teach us not to sell ourselves short!

Take Ownership of Your Life Story

It does not matter if our story is going in the right direction that we intended, or it’s taken an entirely new turn which is unexpected, ownership has to taken.

Remember each decision we make can change the course of our story.

Rather than blaming someone else for all the things that have gone wrong in our life, why not take ownership of your story and write yourself a better story.

How can you write a better story?

Look around, see what needs to be changed as well address what needs to be addressed at this time. Stories change with the smallest of decisions.

Each small decision leads to another decision which then ultimately leads to the life-changing decision. As each decision is made, hence our life plot keeps running.

You know how fiction books function on plots. Every chapter you read will have a different scenario, and it’s the same with our life.

Know What Triggers You

If you don’t know what triggers you, then you need to learn it now. Those triggers can change the course of life quickly.

For example, a friend gets mad at their friend for some inconsequential event. This event could be life-changing. Why?

Because friendship could be over for life.

The event that caused the friendship to break up may not be a huge thing. But the trigger behind the incident is what caused things to go sour.

Learning what your triggers are, can change how you are going to perceive as well be aware of what’s coming at you.

Give Your Assumptions Some Credit

Most times we hear it’s not right to assume anything. But sometimes we do have to give our assumptions some credit.

There are times when we make assumptions; they usually prove to be true.

Forfeiting what you’ve been taught about assumptions, you need to know that assumptions can sometimes lead you out of trouble.

Growing up I was always told not to assume anything about anyone. Being the naïve person that I was at that time, I always second-guessed my assumptions.

There were times where I ignored my assumptions, went along with whatever was planned and came out the other end not knowing if what I did was right or wrong.

Most times it was wrong!

Okay, not a criminal or anything. Just letting you know, your assumptions can sometimes be spot on.

When working to improve self-awareness to gain some inner insight it takes time. It doesn’t happen instantly. You will need to focus consciously on how you bring self-awareness into your life.

  1. Hi Jagi,

Thank you for this insightful article about self awareness. I agree that self awareness is important because when we have a better understanding of ourselves, we are able to experience ourselves as unique and separate individuals. We are then empowered to make changes and to build on our areas of strength as well as identify areas where we would like to make improvements.

Further, l have practiced some of the methods especially mediation to improve my self-awareness. It really helps me to reduce stress and anxiety .

    Best wishes.

  2. Hi Jagi! As you have explained, self-awareness in very important.  We need to be in control. Many times people let circumstances or things they can’t explain guide the course of their lives.

I like this list you have given for improve self-awareness. And one thing that I have learned in your post is Mindfulness. I’ll definitely give it a try!

I also have a question concerning triggers. Do they usually change over time?

    1. Yes, triggers will no longer be triggers as they change due to the person becoming self-aware. thank you for your comment.

  3. Improving our self-awareness and inner insight is very important but I noticed that not a lot of people are interested in doing or just do not know that it is possible. Or maybe they do not just know the benefits.  I believe that we stand to gain a lot from being self-aware, for example, taking control of one’s story for people who do not like losing control of their life. And giving credit to our assumptions. This one is something I am still working on, it would save us a lot of mistakes. I know a lot of mistakes that I would have been able to avoid if I could become so self-aware that I know and work in tandem with my  intuitions.

  4. Hello,

Being aware of ourselves, especially knowing I’ll strength, weaknesses and goals, can help us chart a clearer path to our destination. I like to help other people around me grow by assigning them little tasks. Most times, it doesn’t mean I can’t do it, but I’m nudging my team to achieve more.

I appreciate the advises you give on improving self awareness, I try to be mindful of every moment, and love every moment to the fullest. Hopefully, we all learn everyday, and turn out to be better people

  5. You are hitting some very important points in your article.  These are true no matter what condition your health is. Meditation is the most important part of my daily routine.  It helps me focus, it helps me get through my day, but it also has to help me get over illnesses.

Know what triggers me is key, for both my emotional and physical health.  Sometimes walking away is better for sure.

    Thanks for the article!
